California GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy on Friday denied reports that he was planning to resign from Congress and that he plans to run for re-election.

According to KGET, a local news station in Kern County, which is part of McCarthy’s congressional district, he told the station that he would not resign and will run for re-election.

“NEW: @SpeakerMcCarthy (R-Bakersfield) personally confirmed with @KGETnews that he has no intentions of resigning from his US House seat representing CA’s 20th Congressional District,” KGET News reporter Eytan Wallace wrote on X. “To the contrary, McCarthy said he intends to run for reelection.”

Politico and CNN both reported earlier today that McCarthy was planning on potentially resigning from Congress.

CASE

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted as House speaker earlier this week by eight House Republicans. Many of them initially opposed McCarthy’s speakership, and cited recent budget negotiations as the reason for ousting him.

The House is expected to vote on a new speaker next week.
